Homemade Nutella Spread Recipe/ Chocolate Hazelnut Spread

Homemade Nutella Spread Recipe/ Chocolate Hazelnut Spread

How many of you are like me….homemade dips and sauces freak. I just can’t satisfy myself with store bought material and will try to make them at home.

When I first read about homemade Nutella in Gayathri’s blog, I always wanted to make it, but somehow it took a back seat.

Few month back, when my father came back from US, along with other goodies he also brought a big pack of hazelnuts. My dear sister knows that I love to have this type of items related to cooking rather than cosmetics, so she sends a big bag exclusively for me full of all cooking related things. Sisters are like that only…. Always caring and know what you want, just like a mother.

This week, I’m running blogging marathon with the theme condiments. While I was thinking about the options that I can make for this theme, my daughter reminded me of long due Nutella spread (she is a huge fan of Nutella and when I need Nutella for something, the jar is always licked empty…. Courtesy to this little girl of mine 😁). Without any ifs and buts, I decided to make it.

I looked for various recipes and found all of them to be almost similar. With a little tweak, I made my Nutella and asked the critics…. My son, to taste it. He loved the taste of it, in fact more than the store bought, only difference between the two, that both of us noticed was the texture. Store bought Nutella is a bit smoother than home made. Then I looked for the texture of other’s homemade Nutella and got satisfied to find out the same story with others as well. So who cares for the little difference in the texture when the taste is far better and you know what is there inside.

  1. Roast hazelnut either in oven at 180°C for 10 minutes or in a pan over medium heat.
  2. Rub them to remove skin.
  3. Transfer the roasted hazelnut to a food processor and grind till it forms a smooth butter like paste. Scrape the sides in between to get an overall smooth consistency.
  4. Add cocoa, sugar, salt, vanilla extract and oil. Continue blending all the ingredients for a couple of minutes with scraping the sides in between.
  5. Melt the chocolate over double boiler or in microwave. Keep aside.
  6. Add melted chocolate to hazelnut butter and mix well.
  7. Transfer to a clean jar and store at room temperature.

  1. Homemade nutella is very popular. It is a special treat for anyone who loves the chocolate-nut spread. You got a nice deep color on the spread.

  2. Homemade spreads are a lot more tastier and healthier than the store bought ones even though there might be a slight variation on the texture! Your sister is really so nice to send stuffs related to cooking!

    1. I made two jars of nutella. One was gone within few days only and second I kept a bit away from the eyes and was forgotten. Few days back while arranging the kitchen, saw the jar again and it was as good as in the beginning though it is more than three months old and kept at room temperature only.
