Instant Bread Dahi Bhalla/Bread Dahi Vada

Sunday is the day to relax. However, working women like me have kept so many activities postponed till Sunday, that there is hardly any time to relax. So, as usual, this Sunday too I had a list of jobs to finish. All of a sudden, we got a phone call from one of my husband’s cousin that they are going to pay us a visit. It was such a delight to hear this as I had been waiting for their visit for a long time. The couple is very dear to us. I wanted to make something special for them but the time was limited. I thought of making dahi bhalla chat as the starter. Since, regular bhallas take lot of time, I made bread bhalla instead, which tasted so yum that they were all praise for it. Moreover,  little effort is required to make those. So the next time, whenever you are tempted to eat something chatpata and don’t have time, this is a quick and easy recipe you can think of. Moreover, you can utilize even your stale bread to make mouth watering dahi bhalla chaat.

Bread Dahi Bhalla Ingredients

Bread slices8
Cottage cheese/ Paneer ½ cup
¼ cup
Cashew¼ cup, chopped
Coriander leaves1 tablespoon, chopped
Chili 1, chopped
Salt½ teaspoon
Oilto fry
Curd2 cups
Sugar2 teaspoons
Rock salt¼ teaspoon
Red chili powder¼ teaspoon

Roasted cumin powder½ teaspoon
Green and imli chutneyto serve
Coriander leaves to garnish


For making Vada or Bhalla

  1. Grate or crumble cottage cheese.
  2. Add raisins, cashew, coriander, chili and salt to it and mix well.
  3. Dip a bread slice in water and squeeze out excess water.
  4. Put 1-2 teaspoon of stuffing inside and fold its edges to seal. Give it an oval or ball shape. Similarly make balls of all the bread slices.
  5. Fry in the medium hot oil till light brown.

Assembling Dahi Bhalla

  1. Soak vadas or bhallas in water for about 15 minute. In the meanwhile get the curd ready
  2. Put 2 teaspoons of sugar in curd and mix it well to dissolve sugar.
  3. Stir in salt and rock salt.
  4. Strain curd to remove lumps, if any.
  5. Squeeze out water from the bhallas and arrange these in a platter.
  6. Pour a layer of curd over bhallas followed by chutneys.
  7. Sprinkle cumin powder and red chili powder.
  8. Garnish with coriander and serve.
