Nariyal Wali Meethi Roti is an Indian flatbread that has nariyal in it as the name indicates. It is mildly sweetened with jaggery that is a healthy alternative to sugar.

Nariyal Wali meethi roti

N for Nariyal, this is my today’s entry for month long mega marathon under theme ‘A to Z Indian flatbreads’ that I’m taking part in. It was difficult for me to find a flatbread starting with letter N (though more difficult letters are yet to come). I kept on thinking and searching, then it came to my mind that I have heard word nachni somewhere. Nachni word is used for ragi flour, so I decided to make nachni roti.

My condition is very funny these days, I keep on mumbling words starting with difficult letters like Q, U – Z all the time in the hope that some word may fit into my theme. This mega marathon has made me crazy.

Anyway, I was still not satisfied with nachni, the reason being that if there is only this word then most, if not all will be participating with nachni flour as the base. Finally another word ‘Nariyal’ came to my mind and I decided to make nariyal wali meethi roti. My father in law is very fond of meethi roti, that way I’ll be able to make him happy as well.

We have a festival Basdiya, that comes just after holi. In that festival we make meethi roti, gulgule and meethe chawal. I used the same recipe of meethi roti and added nariyal to it.

Our Sunday brunch is mostly poori with chole or aloo ki sabzi, but for a change I made this nariyal wali meethi roti. When mom, dad came back from satsang, they were delighted to see their favorite meethi roti with mango pickle. It was a real charm to see the smile on hearing the name of it. I think, I should make it more frequently to make them happy 🙂

  1. Chop jaggery into small pieces. Add water and heat it till jaggery dissolves in water. Strain it and keep aside.
  2. In a bowl, take whole wheat flour, desiccated coconut, cardamom powder and fennel seeds.
  3. Add 1 tsp ghee and jaggery mixture. Mis it well.
  4. Knead a semi stiff dough using milk.
  5. Divide the dough into 8 parts and roll into balls.
  6. Roll each ball into thick roti. Sprinkle some more coconut over it. Again roll it lightly so that coconut sticks to it. Poke it well with a fork or knife. It makes roti crisp.
  7. Heat a griddle at medium flame. Apply oil on it and transfer roti over it. Reduce the flame. Let it cook on one side. Apply oil on the top and flip side. Cook roti at low heat till well cooked and crisp.
  8. Serve hot or cold. Enjoy it as such or with mango pickle.
