When ever we go out to eat South Indian food, the one thing I like to eat most is the chutneys. As soon as waiter keeps chutneys in front of us, I start eating them. By the time dosa arrives on my table, I finish more than half of the chutneys.

This week in blogging marathon, my theme is ‘condiments’. For such a delicious theme, how can I leave aside my favourite South Indian chutneys. So my today’s recipe is a very easy chutney i.e. Onion tomato chutney. I made this chutney for the breakfast to serve as a side with upma. You can have it with idli, dosa or even with your favourite paratha.

Instructions
  1. Heat oil in a pan. Add chana dal and urad dal. Fry it on low heat till golden brown.
  2. In the same oil lightly fry red chilies, add onion and garlic. Saute till onion turn translucent.
  3. Add tomatoes and cook till they turn mushy.
  4. Take off the flame and let it cool slightly.
  5. Add salt and lemon juice. Grind the mixture to a smooth paste.
To prepare tempering:
  1. Heat oil in a pan.
  2. Add urad dal and mustard seeds. Fry till dal turns golden brown.
  3. Add curry leaves and fry till crisp.
  4. Take off the flame and pour over prepared chutney
  5. Serve with idli, dosa or upma.
