South Indian Lemon Rice Recipe

One of my friend’s mother is an excellent cook and she is very fond of inviting people over meals. Even I had gone to their place a couple of times and savoured the dishes prepared by her. She very fondly discusses the recipes as well.

Lemon rice, one of the most popular rice dish of South India, is my friend’s favorite. So auntie ji makes it usually. Even I had it at their place for the first time years ago. That day onwards lemon rice became my favorite as well. These are so easy to make that even my daughter can make it without any difficulty. Moreover, even leftover rice can be made to good use by making a flavorful, delectable rice dish….. Lemon rice.

Prep Time: 15 min           Cooking Time: 5 min           Serves: 4

Ingredient of Lemon Rice

Cooked Rice2 1/2 cups
Oil2 tablespoons
Peanuts1 tablespoon
Urad dal1 teaspoon
Chana dal1 teaspoon
Mustard seeds1 teaspoon
Dried red chilies2
Turmeric powder1/2 teaspoon
Saltacc to taste
Ginger1 teaspoon, chopped finely
Green chilies1 teaspoon, chopped finely
Curry leavesfew sprigs
Lemon Juice1 tablespoon


  1. Soak 1 cup of basmati rice for 30 minutes. Boil the soaked rice in sufficient quantity of water. Drain and cool these completely. If you have leftover rice, even those could be used.
  2. Heat oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Fry peanuts in the oil till these are browned. Remove peanuts and keep aside.
  3. Add mustard seeds to the remaining oil. As soon as mustard seeds start crackling, add broken dried red chillies followed by urad dal, chana dal, chopped ginger, green chilies and curry leaves. Fry for few seconds.
  4. Add salt and turmeric powder and give a quick stir.
  5. Add peanuts and rice to the above mixture and mix these gently but thoroughly so that the seasoning gets mixed up uniformly.
  6. Switch off the flame. Squeeze the juice of a lemon into above mixture and mix well.
  7. Cover it and keep for 5-10 minutes for incorporation of flavors.
  8. Enjoy the spiciness, tanginess and deliciousness of lemon rice with papad and chutney of your choice.
